Picking Baby's Name

Picking out a name for your baby can be one of the most challenging things you’ll ever do. There’s just so much to consider when you are thinking of names. You want to pick one that will suit the baby when they are young as well as when they are an adult. You’ve also got to consider your surname and how the names sound together. If you really can’t decide, consider looking at some of the top baby names of the year.

These can be found either online or in books. Every year at least one new book is released that lists all the top baby names. Some people want a name that is very now and go with what’s in. The problem with this approach is when the little one goes to grade school they are likely to have many friends all with the same first name as them.

Another approach is to think outside the box and choose a name that is unusual and original. Most of us have heard of some of the interesting names that stars have chosen recently for their children. Suri, Shiloh, and Apple are all names that Hollywood’s elite have come up with for their offspring. You may not want to go with something that original but think of a name that everyone else hasn’t.

Looking back into your family history can be a fun and meaningful way to come up with a name for your newborn. Some families have a name that is passed down from one generation to the next. Using the top baby names from your family tree is a great way to honor your heritage.

Don’t just consider the first names of your relatives though. Sometimes a surname makes a great first name. If your mother had a charming maiden name, consider pairing that up with your surname. She’ll be incredibly touched by the gesture and your child will have a bit of history to tell when others ask where their name came from. With this approach it’s fair to say the name probably won’t be found in any top baby names lists.

It’s often hard to pick the name your child will carry with them before they are born. Although many people choose their child’s name months before they are make their first appearance in the world, you may want to wait until you see that special little face before picking a name. The baby’s personality in those first few hours might give you a clue about what name best suits them.

In the event that you do pick a name that the child doesn’t enjoy once they start to grow, remember that nicknames often take precedence. Many adults pick up the nicknames they had when they were kids and use them throughout their lives. So all that thought you put into picking top baby names might be for naught as the child’s nickname might actually fit them best.
